The TurboGrafx-16 was the first console released in the 16-bit era and the smallest ever made. It was released in Japan late 1987, the United States and France in 1989 and also limited release in the United Kingdom and Spain in 1990.

Though the Nintendo Famicom remained hugely successful, it was Hudson Soft and NEC’s The TurboGrafx-16 (known in Japan and France as the PC Engine) cartridge based home video game console that emerged as their main rival, as it had superseded its other competitor the Sega MegaDrive. Nintendo and Sega have always been considered as the two major players in the 16-bit era, particularly in Europe and North America, this was however a bit different over in Japan.
